As soft music played and graduates hugged their loved ones in a university hall in Australia, one story quietly stood out—a story built over years of loss, determination, and relentless hope.
For Eunice Wangeci Kones, earning her Master’s in Business Management was more than an academic milestone. It was a personal victory decades in the making.
Standing proudly beside her was her husband, Levi Kones, who shared her story in a heartfelt Facebook post. His words struck a chord with many—not just because of the love he expressed, but because of the strength behind her journey.
“Today, my heart overflows with pride as I celebrate the incredible academic journey of my remarkable wife, Wangeci Kones,” he wrote.
A Dream on Hold
Wangeci’s dream of studying abroad began early. Her mother once sold a piece of land hoping to send her to school in Australia. But life had other plans.
Her parents passed away while she was still young. Then, at just 28, she lost her first husband. She became a single mother to two young children, forced to shelve her academic ambitions.
She briefly enrolled in a bridging course, but the college shut down. Her dream seemed over.
A New Start
In 2013, Wangeci met Levi. When she told him about her past, he saw more than struggle—he saw someone who had never let go of her goals.
“When Wangeci shared all of this with me, it became clear that we couldn’t allow this dream to slip through her fingers.”
She started over in 2015 with a certificate at the Kenya Institute of Management. Then came a diploma. Then a higher diploma. In 2018, she graduated.
But the celebration was short-lived. That same year, Levi was diagnosed with cancer.
Wangeci dropped everything to care for him. She was by his side through surgeries, chemotherapy, and treatment in India.
“Yet, through it all, her passion for continuing her studies never faltered,” Levi said.
“By God’s grace, I healed.”
A Second Chance
In 2020, she applied to the University of Nairobi but was turned away—no space.
Two years later, her cousin moved to Australia. That moment changed everything.
She reached out to a new education agent. This time, someone saw her potential. Her student visa was approved in six months.
Wangeci left for Australia. No family there. No backup. Just faith and fire.
Against All Odds
She juggled studies, work, and life in a new country. And in 2023, she graduated.
This year, her graduation meant even more. It was the one-year anniversary of Levi joining her in Australia.
“Last time I was watching online,” he wrote.
“Today I am most privileged to be a witness in person.”
His tribute was more than pride. It was full of respect—for a woman who never gave up.
“Wangeci, it is an honor to stand by your side as you achieve something truly extraordinary.”
More Than a Degree
For Wangeci, this degree is a symbol of everything she has overcome. For Levi, it’s a lesson their daughters will carry for life.
“You’ve shown our daughters what true strength, perseverance, and faith look like.”
And the story isn’t over.
“Go ahead and get that PhD,” Levi smiled.
“Because when they call for Dr. Kones… I will stand up.”
