In recent days, the Kenyan community in Australia has been shaken by an outpouring of grief following the loss of three cherished members: Stephen Munuve, Michelle Kahiga, and Sally Biringu. Each life, uniquely vibrant, has left an indelible mark—and their sudden departures have cast a somber cloud over the hearts of many.
Honoring Stephen Munuve
Stephen Munuve, a beloved member of the Kenyan community, will be laid to rest on Tuesday, May 6th, 2025, with a funeral service at Eco Memorial Park – Stapylton. The service will begin at 2pm, with attendees asked to arrive by 1:50pm. A wake will follow at The Glen Hotel (Garden Bar) from 5pm, where friends and loved ones will gather to celebrate his life, laughter, and legacy.
Mourning Michelle Kahiga
In an especially heart-wrenching loss, we mourn the passing of Michelle Kahiga, a promising first-year student at James Cook University. Michelle was found deceased in her car on Sunday, May 4th, just two months after arriving in Australia. Bright, driven, and full of potential, Michelle had already begun to make an impression within her community. Her untimely death is currently under investigation by Queensland Police, and we extend our deepest sympathies to her grieving family in Kenya.
Remembering Sally Biringu
We also grieve the tragic loss of Sally Biringu, the only daughter of Jeff Waswa and Mother Ann, who died in a devastating collision on the Gold Coast motorway. Sally’s funeral will also take place on May 6th, and we ask the community to surround her family with support, prayers, and love during this time of unimaginable sorrow.

This has been an extraordinarily difficult season for the Kenyan-Australian diaspora. As we remember Stephen, Michelle, and Sally, let us also remember each other. Let us lean into our shared strength and community spirit, offering comfort where it is needed most.
