The Kenyan-Australian community is mourning the tragic loss of Madeline Jeruto, a 25-year-old international student from Kenya who passed away in Adelaide on Wednesday night, 26 June 2025.
Jeruto, originally from Chebarus Village in Nandi County, arrived in Australia in September 2023 with the hopes of building a brighter future through education and opportunity. Just two weeks into her new life abroad, she suffered a mild stroke, an event that marked the beginning of a long and difficult medical journey.
According to close members of the community and family friends, Jeruto faced her health challenges with resilience and quiet strength. Despite receiving ongoing medical care and the support of South Australia’s Kenyan diaspora, her condition remained fragile. She passed away at the Royal Adelaide Hospital following a sudden cardiac arrest.
A Life Cut Short, But Not Forgotten
Described by those who knew her as humble, disciplined, and deeply resilient, Madeline’s life touched many—both in her home country and in Australia, where she had quickly become part of a close-knit network of international students and diaspora members.
“She was soft-spoken, respectful, and had big dreams,” said a member of the Kenyan Association of South Australia (KASA). “Even in her weakest moments, she carried herself with dignity. This loss is deeply personal to all of us.”
Though her time in Australia was short-lived, Madeline’s story has stirred a wave of reflection and compassion within the community. Her journey is a powerful reminder of the unseen struggles many international students endure—far from home, without immediate family, and often facing immense pressure academically, financially, and emotionally.
Community Calls for Support to Repatriate Her Body
Efforts are now underway to repatriate Madeline’s body to Kenya so that her family can give her a proper farewell. The estimated cost of repatriation is $45,000 AUD, covering flights, funeral arrangements, and related expenses.
The Kenyan Association of South Australia (KASA) is coordinating the fundraising appeal and has issued a public call for emotional and financial support. “No contribution is too small,” the organisation said in a statement. “This is about honouring her memory with dignity and reuniting her with the family that raised her.”
