If you are searching for flights to Kenya from Australia for December, expect at least one stop, a long day in the air and the highest fares of the year. No airline flies non-stop between Australia and Kenya. Every route to Nairobi connects through a hub such as Dubai, Doha, Johannesburg, Bangkok or Mauritius. Fare data from comparison sites shows December is the most expensive month to go.

The cheapest December returns we found on 16 to 20 October started at about $1,780. Peak-date fares on the main airlines were often well above $3,500. Here is what the routes look like from each capital, what fares were doing when we checked, and what you need to sort out before you land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

How much do flights to Kenya cost in December 2026?

There is no single price, and the numbers vary widely depending on the source, the city and the dates.

Source (date checked) Route and dates Lowest return fare shown
FlightsFinder (snapshot of 16 Oct 2026) Australia–Nairobi, depart 1 Dec, return 1 Feb $1,779
FlightsFinder (16 Oct 2026) Australia–Nairobi, 3–27 Dec $1,793
FlightsFinder (16 Oct 2026) Australia–Nairobi, 4–8 Dec $2,130
Air Mauritius (20 Oct 2026) Perth–Nairobi, December departures from $3,853
KAYAK, Qatar Airways (20 Oct 2026) Perth–Nairobi, departing 11–17 Dec $3,846 to $4,254

FlightsFinder does not name the departure city for most of its December results. It found a one-way fare to Nairobi on 3 December from $870. On average, the site rates December as the most expensive month to fly to Kenya, with returns of more than $1,779. February is the cheapest, with a return from Perth from $1,398.

On the airline side, Air Mauritius’s Perth–Nairobi page showed December returns from $3,853. It showed November from $2,678 and January 2027 from $3,638. These fares were collected within the previous 48 hours. KAYAK’s Qatar Airways Perth–Nairobi page listed mid-December departures between $3,846 and $4,254 return. By KAYAK’s own averages, a December return on that route costs about $3,400, compared with about $2,100 in February.

What this means in practice: low fares do appear for December, but usually on dates that are less convenient, with long stays or early-December departures. Flying out in the week before Christmas costs considerably more.

Are there direct flights from Australia to Kenya?

No. FlightConnections, which tracks airline schedules, lists no direct flights from Melbourne or from Sydney to Nairobi, and FlightsFinder found none from any Australian city. Every trip involves at least one connection.

Best routes to Nairobi by city

The flying times below come from FlightConnections. They count only time in the air and leave out the layover. Total journey times from airline schedules are given where available.

From Main connection points Airlines selling the whole trip on one ticket Shortest time in the air
Perth Mauritius, Johannesburg, Dubai, Bangkok, Doha, Guangzhou Emirates, Qatar Airways, China Southern about 12h 55m via Mauritius
Adelaide Dubai, Doha Emirates, Qatar Airways Emirates total journey about 23h 35m
Melbourne Bangkok, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Guangzhou Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways, China Southern about 18h 15m via Bangkok
Sydney Johannesburg, Bangkok, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Guangzhou Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways, China Southern about 18h 30m via Johannesburg
Brisbane Dubai, Doha Emirates, Qatar Airways Emirates total journey about 24h 45m

From Perth

Perth has the shortest trip. Air Mauritius flies from Perth to Mauritius, and Kenya Airways flies on from Mauritius to Nairobi. That gives about 12 hours 55 minutes in the air, according to FlightConnections, whose Perth data was last updated in June 2026. This route does not run every day, so check the schedule before you plan around it. Perth also has connections via Johannesburg (Qantas or South African Airways, then a connecting flight to Nairobi), Dubai (Emirates), Doha (Qatar Airways) and Bangkok (Thai Airways, then Kenya Airways).

From Adelaide

Adelaide travellers have two one-stop options. Emirates’ published schedule shows EK441 leaving Adelaide at 10:35pm and connecting in Dubai to reach Nairobi at 2:40pm the next day, a total of about 23 hours 35 minutes. Qatar Airways flies Adelaide–Doha once a day, and you can connect there to Nairobi.

From Melbourne

Melbourne has the widest choice. FlightConnections lists five one-stop routes, via Bangkok, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha and Guangzhou, with 18 hours 15 minutes to 20 hours 55 minutes in the air. Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways and China Southern all sell the whole journey on one ticket. The Bangkok option combines a flight to Bangkok (Thai Airways, Jetstar or Finnair) with Kenya Airways onward to Nairobi. If you book these as separate tickets, check what happens if the first flight is late.

From Sydney

Emirates’ Sydney–Nairobi schedule shows a 6am departure (EK415) that reaches Nairobi at 8pm the same day, about 22 hours in total. Evening departures at 9:10pm and 9:45pm arrive at 2:30pm the next day, a total of about 24 hours 45 minutes to 25 hours 20 minutes. Sydney also has a route through Johannesburg: Qantas to Johannesburg, then Kenya Airways or Airlink to Nairobi. FlightConnections lists this as the shortest time in the air from Sydney.

From Brisbane

Emirates’ Brisbane–Nairobi schedule shows an 8:55pm departure (EK435) that arrives in Nairobi at 2:40pm the next day via Dubai, about 24 hours 45 minutes in total. There is also an early-morning EK431 option. Qatar Airways flies Brisbane–Doha daily and connects to Nairobi from there.

Mombasa and Kisumu

You can also fly into Mombasa (MBA) or Kisumu (KIS), usually with an extra connection. In FlightsFinder’s snapshot, Mombasa fares were generally higher than Nairobi fares for similar dates. For example, it showed a one-way fare to Mombasa on 24 December from $1,185, against $870 to Nairobi on 3 December. If your family is upcountry or at the coast, compare the price of flying all the way with flying into Nairobi and taking a domestic flight or the road.

When should you book December flights to Kenya?

FlightsFinder says fares to Kenya are typically cheapest about two months before departure, and cheaper on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. For December travel, that window is now. Booking-site advice is generic, though, and sites do not always agree. Use it as a rough guide.

The fares above point to a few practical rules. Flying out in early December or after New Year is usually cheaper than in the week before Christmas. Be flexible by a few days either side. Always compare the final price after baggage is added, because many travellers carry gifts home.

Before you fly: eTA, health insurance and your passport

If you travel on an Australian passport, you need an approved Kenya Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) before you leave. This applies to infants and children too. The official portal lists the standard single-entry eTA at $30 and says processing typically takes three working days, sometimes longer. You will need a passport that is valid for at least six months and has a blank page, a recent photo, your itinerary and proof of where you are staying. If you are staying with family, you will need an invitation letter from your host and a copy of their ID.

Health insurance is now part of the eTA. According to Smartraveller, whose Kenya advice was updated on 17 October 2026, mandatory inbound travel health insurance has been built into the eTA application. Its cover may be limited, so the Australian Government advises taking out comprehensive travel insurance as well. Smartraveller’s overall advice for Kenya is to “exercise a high degree of caution”.

If you hold both Australian and Kenyan citizenship, read the guidance carefully. Smartraveller says Kenya recognises dual nationality but has not fully enacted laws around it. It advises dual nationals to always travel on their Australian passport, which means applying for an eTA. If you plan to enter on a Kenyan passport, confirm the requirements with the Kenya High Commission in Canberra before you fly.

Check your passport’s expiry date now. Renewing a Kenyan or Australian passport takes time, so do not leave it until December.
